CIT at a Glance

  • Originally developed and implemented in Memphis, TN in 1988 with partnerships from the Memphis Police Department, NAMI, mental health professionals and advocates.
  • Developed and implemented in Centre County in 2010, with eight individuals attending a CIT "Train The Trainer" course in Johnstown, PA.
  • All officers and emergency personnel register for the training on a voluntary basis.
  • The 40-hour comprehensive training emphasizes mental health-related topics, crisis resolution skills and de-escalation training, and access to community-based services.
  • The format of the training consists of lectures, on-site visitation and exposure to several mental health facilities, intensive interactions with individuals with a mental illness, and scenario-based de-escalation skill training.

CIT News

  • CIT-Trained Personnel
    There are currently 166 Centre County CIT-Trained Personnel.
  • CIT Statewide Symposium
    In March, 2014, Centre County CIT hosted the second annual CIT Statewide Symposium. This was a huge success with participation from 18 counties across the commonwealth as well as members from PCCD (Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency), CoE (Center of Excellence) and PCPA (Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association).
  • Officer of the Year
    In May, 2014, CIT Presented two individuals with the CIT Officer of the Year Award. The recipients of this award were: Director of Adult Services, Natalie Corman and State College Police Detective, Chris Weaver. These individuals received this award for their ongoing commitment and dedication to the CIT Program by utilizing their CIT skills consistently, attending committee meetings and for their participation in CIT trainings and conferences throughout the Commonwealth.
  • CIT International Conference Presentation
    The Centre County Crisis Intervention Team has been selected to present at the CIT International Conference in Monterey California in October, 2014. The focus of the presentation will be on the role of the CIT Coordinator.
  • 2013 CIT International Officer of the Year Award
    Congratulations to Ferguson Township Police Officer, Travis Park, for being awarded the 2013 CIT International Officer of the Year Award at the International Conference in Hartford, CT.
